A Brief History Of South Africa:

The first inhabitants of the land were nomadic. The San people lived in South Africa for thousands of years and roamed from one place to another, hunting antelopes, lions, and other wild animals. They left no written records or carvings like those found in Europe, but we know about their lifestyle by studying rock paintings that they created.

Europeans arrived in the 16th century. The Portuguese were the first to contact local tribes, but soon they were followed by Dutchmen who landed on this new continent for commercial and not so many religious reasons. They started building trading posts along the South African coast and established friendly relations with the Khoikhoi people, while some continued their way to the north and founded Cape Town in 1652.

The next wave of Europeans was British who started settling in South Africa during the 18th century. It became evident that this was a place where they could quickly establish plantations for growing crops such as cotton, sugar cane, or using slave labor on their fields. They took over city after city with little resistance from the locals and in 1806 they had control over entire South Africa.

After the British kicked out their rivals Dutch, who were well established before them, at the end of the 19th century, a new movement started – Boers or Afrikaner people moved to the Transvaal region which was only loosely controlled by London authorities. They were seeking for independence and soon they got it. They declared the republic of South Africa in 1934, but Britain didn’t recognize this until 1961 after a bloody war that lasted almost two years.

Apartheid was an official policy that divided white people from black Africans who were not allowed to vote or even work at the same places as whites did. This policy was active from 1948 to 1990 and it ended with Nelson Mandela’s release from prison after 27 years.

Since 1994, there has been an all party government in the country, but South Africa is still facing many social problems such as high crime rate or AIDS epidemic which kills thousands of people every year. However, this little piece of Africa in the south of Europe is a pleasant tourist attraction with beautiful beaches and nature, good for sunbathing or simply exploring.

The history of South Africa can be divided into several periods:

  • Stone Age when people were hunters and gatherers.
  • Iron Age which was marked by battles between tribes that settled on fertile lands close to rivers.
  • European colonization that started in 1652.
  • Apartheid era.
  • Democratic South Africa.

The earliest evidence of human habitation on modern-day South African territory dates back to approximately 125 000 years ago. A group called San lived here while they moved from one place to another, following herds of animals that provided them with food. San people leave no written records, but scientists found out about their way of life through rock paintings that they created throughout the country for thousands of years, later studied and categorized according to period.

Europeans started arriving in South Africa between the 15th and 16th centuries when Portuguese traders landed on this continent’s shores. Shortly after, Dutchmen came to this land for commercial reasons rather than religious ones and established trading posts along the South African coast. They had friendly relations with the Khoikhoi people, but soon they continued their voyage to the north and founded Cape Town in 1652.

During the 18th century, British started settling in South Africa when it became obvious that this was a place where they would easily establish plantations for crops such as cotton, sugar cane or using slave labor on their fields. They took over city after city with little resistance from the locals and in 1806 British had control over entire South Africa.

In 1836 Boers started moving to the Transvaal region only loosely controlled by London authorities, seeking independence. This group of people started calling themselves Afrikaners. Soon, they got independence as the Republic of South Africa was declared in 1934 by them, but Britain didn’t recognize this until 1961 after a bloody war that lasted almost two years.
